Toole, Utah (April 30, 2011) - An old Russian proverb states "He that is afraid of bad luck will never know good". Randy and his #6 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60 started out the weekend running first and second in practices, Friday morning, at the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Utah at Miller Motorsports Park. Things were looking up until a SNOW STORM caused a lack of track visibility and canceled the qualifying session The starting grid for Saturday's race was set by driver's points, placing Randy in seventh. As the green light came on to signal the drivers to go, Randy hit the gas and felt something break and then sat helplessly as drivers moved to avoid him and former teammate, Andy Pilgrim, who also had problems. A Ford Mustang was not able to avoid Randy and slammed hard into the back of the car. The Volvo's legendary safety innovations did their jobs and Randy was not injured. The car, on the other hand, was heavily damaged and done for the weekend.
"Lord have mercy, the disasters continue. Something in the drive train just snapped and the car didn't even move. I got hit really hard from the back. Thank God I was in a Volvo. The Volvo rear end did its job and dissipated the crash energy and crushed. I could have been really hurt in a regular racecar. The Volvo is designed to absorb the impact energy and it did. The rear was totally flattened from the high impact speed. I really thought we had a chance to win this race after the car handled so well in practice. In fact, it has never handled better. My heart aches for the K-PAX team to bring home another crashed car. We need to keep on keeping on."
"The great news is that K-PAX won in the touring class with Aaron Povoledo in the Volvo C30! They also did well all weekend and came away with a victory. I want to especially thank the K-PAX team for their hard work. I wish them strength as we continue to push until we get this dark cloud blown away. I also want to thank my personal sponsors, WeatherTech, ChaseCam and saferacer.com for their support. Thanks also goes out to Piloti for setting me up with some great shoes for on and off the track. I am wearing them right now. I am also pleased to report that Cooper MacNeil scored a third place finish in his first Ferrari Challenge this week. He is off to a great start. This has been a tough season for us so far but we won't give up."
The Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Utah will air on Versus, June 18 at 3:00 PM EST. Randy's next race will be a doubleheader at Mosport International Raceway in Ontario, May 20 - 22, with the World Challenge GT series.
