Sonoma, CA (August 25, 2013) - After podium finishes last year at the Sonoma Grand Prix, the K-PAX Volvo team traveled to wine country with hopes of champagne. Randy and his No. 6 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60 started out strong in all three Pirelli World Challenge practices, while Alex had engine issues on and off all weekend. Randy qualified in third behind the two Cadillacs. Mayhem broke out at the standing start when Johnny O'Connell's pole-sitting Cadillac failed to launch. Randy, just behind him, took amazing, evasive action and got around the stalled car. As he raced Andy Pilgrim up the hill and briefly into the lead, Andy tapped him in the rear, spinning the Volvo off track. Randy was forced to watch the pack go by as he waited to reenter the track in last place. A mid-race caution allowed him to make up some ground and pass slower cars, and he battled back to a fourth place finish, an effort deserving of champagne.
"My Volvo was running great all weekend and the brakes were better than ever, but those Cadillacs were running 1 - 2 and looking strong. At the start, Johnny bogged badly and I missed hitting him by millimeters. Its always dicey when the car in front of you doesn't get going when you are driving a powerful AWD Volvo S60 that leaps off the line. I pulled into the lead, just ahead of the Andy Pilgrim Cadillac, as we went up the hill to Turn Two. As we entered the corner, I got a light brush way in the back, and spun to a stop, stuck there until the entire pack got by. Rats! Andy is a great racer and lifelong friend, and it was just one of those racin' deals. He went on to win, and we fought back through the pack to a fine fourth. Alex unfortunately did not fare as well and retired early with electrical issues. Always an adventure."
"This weekend we were really honored to have Alex’s Lemonade Stand on our cars. It is Volvo North America's official charity and fights against childhood cancer. Jay Hamill and Geno Effler from Volvo North America came out to support us, as well as the Golden Gate Volvo Car Club of America. We also enjoyed the company of Volvo Rents, Volvo's construction company, and their customers who came out to visit us again. I would also like to thank my personal sponsors Saferacer and TPC Racing for their support this season."
Randy will again be joining the "Racers For Research" team in the Energy For Life Walk: New York to raise money for research to cure Mitochondrial Disease. Randy's press agent, Jennifer Schwartzott, has the disease and is asking the racing community to join the fight by going to www.energyforlifewalk.org/westernnewyork and joining the walk as a virtual walker or donor. 1 out of every 200 people has the genetic mutation and could develop the disease and it is closely linked to numerous other diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and cancer. Please join the fight!
Randy remains fourth in the GT Drivers' Championships. The Sonoma Grand Prix will be broadcast September 8th at 3:30 PM (EDT) on NBC Sports Network. You can also view live streaming on www.world-challengeTV.com during the races and continuously on demand after races. The next race for the Pirelli World Challenge will be the series finale on the streets of Houston, October 4.
