Bowmanville, Ont, Canada (July 12, 2014) -- Randy and his Freedom Autosport No. 26 Mazda MX-5 team traveled north of the border to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, with the goal of having a good, clean race with no major problems. Knowing that CTMP had a long straightaway, Randy was concerned that the other makes with more horsepower would be a challenge over the Mazda which excels at tracks with tight corners. Round 7 of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Championships started out well for the Freedom Autosport team, with strong practices and a fifth place qualifying run by Randy. He quickly moved up to fourth at the start of the race but began to have handling problems in the hot, summer temperatures. He stayed near the front until a caution flag, pitting for service and the mandatory driver change. Co-driver Andrew Carbonell got in and restarted the race in seventh position. Andrew had a great battle with the other top cars, finishing on the podium in third place!
"We got the monkey off our back! In qualifying, I was very happy with our car setup and excited for the race. I had a good start and was tailing a couple Hondas when our Mazda got tail happy, which was something I had been working on. I was really disappointed. It was probably due to the increasingly warm temperatures which affected the chassis balance. But I was very patient and worked to find a clean way to pass the Hondas. Then we got a caution and decided to pit. Andrew got in and had a close race with a BMW and Porsche. He raced hard and was in the lead for one glorious corner, but the straightaway speeds and warm temps held us back. Finishing third out of 26 cars was a great accomplishment and we ran a clean race, reaching our goal for the weekend. We are back up on the ball again and need to keep notching solid finishes for the rest of the season."
"Our Freedom Autosport team did a great job this weekend, especially considering we were down a few guys. My Freedom Autosport teammates, Mat and Mark Pombo struggled with a loose car and setup but at least there were no disasters. I want to thank my personal sponsors Blackbox Guard, SafeRacer.com, Motor Trend Magazine and TPC Racing for their continued support. On to Indy which should be really interesting."
The Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix Presented by Hawk Performance will be televised Sunday, July 20 at 10:00 AM ET on FOX Sports 1. The next IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race will be on the road course at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 25, 2014.
