Austin, TX (September 20, 2014) -- After a short break in the racing schedule, Randy and his Freedom Autosport No. 26 Mazda MX-5 team traveled to Texas for Round 11 of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Championships at Circuit of the Americas.  Randy qualified the Mazda in sixth position and, happy with some of the changes the crew had made, felt confident about their chances in the race.  But right from the beginning, something was wrong with the transmission.  Randy was able to continue on but racing near the front was not easy.  It also started to rain on parts of the track right about the time Randy came in for the mandatory driver's change.  Co-driver Andrew Carbonell got in and drove a very impressive stint with the ill functioning transmission and spotty track conditions, managing to finish in tenth place.

"Considering the troubles we had, tenth is a very satisfying position to finish in.  We arrived at COTA with a new set of shocks and found that they helped the car. We were right on pace and qualified in sixth.  This is a step in the right direction and the shocks will continue to get better as we fine tune them to our Mazda.  But right from the pace lap, we developed a transmission problem that made it difficult to shift and very tricky to drive.  It was frustrating.  I have great respect for Andrew for bringing the car as high as sixth place and hanging on for tenth.  It was a tremendous effort.  He had to work really hard to get speed out of the car with the shifting issues and showed amazing talent.  Very impressive.  We only had one yellow flag at the beginning for a very hairy crash.  The fact that there were no other caution flags is a real credit to the whole Continental field with the changing track conditions.  The rain kept it from becoming really hot though.  I want to congratulate my teammates Mark and Mat Pombo who finished on the podium in third.  Their father Pepe Pombo, with whom I used to race, was their car chief for the week.  It was a big family event and nice to see."

"My fun did not stop after my stint in the car.  After our Continental race, I stayed at COTA to do color commentary with Greg Creamer for the Porsche GT3 Cup race.  Then I flew to California where today I got to judge motorcycles at the Montecito Car and Bike show in Santa Barbara.  This was my first official judging duty in my beloved hobby of old motorcycles.  There was a cool 1972 Ducati Imola 750 GT.  All original and very valuable.  Next weekend I am doing a Motor Trend track test at Willow Springs, CA.  Watch for the release of the Best Drivers' Car videos on You Tube.  I am also looking forward to taking my own racecar to Watkins Glen for the American Endurance Racing series, October 17 - 19.  It will be just like the old days.  Special thanks to my personal sponsors Blackbox Guard, SafeRacer.com, Motor Trend and TPC Racing for their continued support."

The Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of the Americas will be televised September 28 at 12:00 PM ET on FOX Sports 1.  The next IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race will be at Road Atlanta on October 3, 2014.
